And no epic road trip is complete without a trip down the wine and kindness of the gorgeous Route 62.

Itinerary:

This is a general tour itinerary, which may change or run in reverse or different order.

Day 1:  Cape Town to Wilderness Region or Day 5 If Running in Reverse

Travel time ± 6hr / ± 450km

Early morning pick-up from your Cape Town CBD or Stellenbosch accommodation (usually between 06:00 and 08:00)

Today begins with a beautiful and exciting trip through oasis-like seaside towns along an ocean-lined route surrounded by forested national parks. After about 4 hours of driving south-east, you’ll arrive at the Garden Route in all its splendour.

Continue on the N2 national highway to reach Botlierskop Game Reserve. Begin your tour with this exciting included safari activity in the heart of the indigenous bushveld.

Spot some of Africa’s wild animals from the back of an open 4×4 vehicle in the malaria-free Botlierskop Private Game Reserve on your first activity stop of the day. Look for the big five, as well as giraffe, white rhino, kudu, lion, elephant, zebra, and wildebeest, to name a few. An experienced game ranger leads the game drive and shares his knowledge of the local wildlife.

After seeing animals in the wild, you’ll continue on to the coast. Tonight’s end destination at a beachy coastal town in Sedgefield for backpackers and Knysna or near Wilderness town area for guest house guests promises a serene and relaxed evening.

You overnight in Wilderness, Knysna region, preferably at the Protea Hotel Knysna Quays or similar (private bathrooms) due to availability.

Day 2: Wilderness to Jeffreys Bay or Day 4 if running in reverse

Travel time ± 3hr / ± 300km

Highlights today include a visit to the Knysna Heads, an optional waterfall zipline or Bloukrans bungy jump, and a Tsitsikamma National Park walk.

As you travel along the coastal belt, the paradise-like coastal towns show off and demonstrate why this region is popular with both tourists and locals. Stop for the obligatory photo op at Knysna Heads, a pair of rocky sandstone cliffs on the lagoon’s edge, to take in the breath-taking lagoon views surrounded by ancient forests.

On this adrenaline-filled day, pristine lush landscapes and adventure go hand in hand… from ziplining over gushing river gorges to magnificent ocean and river views atop Bloukrans Bridge and exploring dense forests along suspension bridges and footpaths in Tsitsikamma National Park – today is all about the “garden” of the Garden Route!

Adrenaline junkies may prepare for the world’s highest Bungy Bridge Jump. The bungy bridge itself appears unassuming as you drive over it, but the squeals and screams indicate that this is not your typical photo stop. People who appear to be normal hurtle down the 216m drop face first, only to spring back up on their elastic cord like a yo-yo. So, if you are feeling brave, why not face your fears and try it?

When ziplining through the nearby Tsitsikamma forest through dramatic scenery and over waterfalls, you will complete five separate slides (the longest of which is 211m), zip over three waterfalls, and slide down one impressive gorge.

This region is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts, and for those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground, a visit to the lush forests of the Tsitsikamma National Park will undoubtedly satisfy your forest fix. Your Tsitsikamma itinerary will be jam-packed with activities ranging from birding to game viewing and waterfall chasing.

The views alone make the short but steep walk to Tsitsikamma’s suspension bridge worthwhile, but the abundant reptile and bird wildlife, secret waterfall, and sandy beach await you along the forest footpaths.

As the sun sets behind the ocean in the early evening, the journey continues along the coast to Jeffreys Bay. Finish the day with dinner at your hotel or a night out at a local delicacy seafood restaurant, while listening to the gentle waves lap against the shore.

Overnight in Jeffreys Bay at On the Beach Guesthouse (private bathroom) or similar.

Day 3: Jeffreys Bay to Addo

Travel time ± 3hr / ± 300km

Highlights today include free time or optional surfing or beach horseback ride in Jeffreys Bay and a tour bus game drive in Addo National Park.

Wake up in South Africa’s iconic “Surf City.” Relax at the beach while enjoying the warmer Indian Ocean waters. Shopaholics can visit JBay’s surf wear shoppers village, or if you have always wanted to surf at this world-renowned surf spot, put your goofy foot forward and go for it. Choose from the following optional activities to fill your morning: hire surfing equipment or reserve a Beach Horseback Ride Riding is an optional activity that allows you to explore the coast by gallop through the shallow waters of the unspoiled, rugged sandy beach.

After a morning of beach adventures, the journey now heads inland to the malaria-free Addo Elephant National Park to see native wildlife in their natural habitat.

The dusty plains of the Klein Karoo give way to a greener horizon as you travel to the world-renowned Greater Addo Region. Your guide will use local knowledge to pinpoint the location of the park’s big game animals while expertly navigating the maze of dusty dirt roads in search of some of the Big Five as well as smaller animals.

You will spend the night in Addo, a small citrus farming community in the Sundays River Valley surrounded by the Zuurberg Mountains, at the Addo Wildlife Lodge (private bathrooms) or similar.

Day 4:  Addo to Oudtshoorn or Day 2 if running in reverse

Travel time ± 4hr / ± 400km

Today’s highlights include a Cango Caves tour and some                elephant observation in nature (optional).

Begin your day with a journey through the landscape of rugged plains and towering cliffs to reach Oudtshoorn, the world’s ostrich capital, located in the semi-desert Klein Karoo.

Deep underground, the limestone chambers of the Cango Caves are alive with drip formation stalactites and stalagmites, as well as remnants of Khoikhoi paintings. Choose the Heritage Tour to test the cave’s acoustics and learn about dripstone formation and evolution from your guide. The Adventure Tour, on the other hand (if available), allows would-be contortionists to squeeze, twist, and wiggle their way through limestone chimneys on a more adventurous underground route.

Those looking for a close encounter with Mother Nature can join rangers on an optional Elephant Observation in Nature at the Buffelsdrift private game reserve this afternoon if time allows (or the next morning in most cases).

Meet Jabari, Malaika, and Bulelo, three rescued elephants who roam freely in their natural habitat bushveld area near a waterhole dam. These gentle giants were orphaned after their parents were poached in South Africa’s north. They were transferred to Buffelsdrift in order to keep the family together, bringing their boisterous personalities with them.

You are free to take photographs from a safe distance and to ask the guides as many questions as you like as you follow in their massive footsteps.

You will have the evening to yourself in the countryside town of Oudtshoorn. Ask your guide to assist you in making a restaurant reservation, or sample local delicacies like ostrich “sosaties” (kebabs) and “pot brood” (bread cooked over open flames) at an optional ‘braai’ (bbq) experience and spend the evening around a crackling fire under the vast twinkling starry country sky.

Overnight in Oudtshoorn at Hlangana Lodge (private bathrooms). An optional upgrade to Buffelsdrift Lodge Luxury Tent glamping is available at extra cost and subject to availability.

Day 5: Oudtshoorn to Cape Town or Day 1 if running in reverse

Travel time ± 6hr / ±500km

Your last day’s highlights include a visit to an ostrich farm and a visit to a Route 62 winery.

Wake up in Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world. If you have not picked it up from the bird-filled paddocks and farms lining the highway or the colourful feather stalls on the way to town centre, you will from the many show farm signs and palatial sandstone homesteads that harken back to a time when ostrich feathers were worth more than gold.

The Cango Ostrich Show Farm allows you to get a glimpse into the farming industry by observing the world’s largest bird beak-to-beak and testing the toughness of the shells.

Complete this week-long epic road trip winding your way through mountain passes where lazy baboons surprise and delight along the roadside; rolling farmlands and fertile microclimates settle among the rows and rows of grapevines.

Explore our famous Route 62, which is modelled after America’s Route 66 but with a distinctly local flavour and is the world’s longest wine route. This is more than just a scenic drive; it is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local country-life culture, sample farm-fresh produce, meet larger-than-life local characters, and sample world-class wines.

Wine lovers will love a Wine Tasting pit stop about halfway to your overnight stop to sample some of the local produce. With a glass of wine in hand, few things are more beautiful to behold than the innate majestic beauty of this Valley of Wine. Non-alcoholic options are available for non-drinkers or children under the legal drinking age.

After completing the region’s bucket list items and exploring the best spots along the Garden Route and beyond, you will say your goodbyes as you arrive in Cape Town or Stellenbosch.
