Located in Southern Africa, Botswana is seen as one of the great tourist countries to visit. The Kalahari Desert covers around 70% of Botswana’s landmass. Zimbabwe is to the north and east, Namibia to the west, South Africa to the south and southeast and to its north lies Zambia.
Best known if you think of Botswana’s landscape, is the Okavango Delta, Chobe and the Kalahari Desert. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is home to a wide variety of animals, including giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas, and even wild dogs.
Not only is Botswana one of Africa’s top safari locations, but it’s widely considered to be among the world’s most spectacular unspoiled natural areas. When it comes to safaris, Botswana is hard to beat.
Botswana is a fantastic travel destination, but you’ll need some time there to see everything it has to offer. If you plan to go for 8 days, you will be able to fit in a few of the designated areas or you could concentrate on one or two destinations and see as much as possible there. It is also advisable to do all your travel arrangements through a qualified guide that knows the area.
If you plan to spent eight days in Botswana, you can expect to visit one or more of the following attractions:
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of Botswana’s many expansive reserves, and it is situated right in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. Despite the fact that the harsh desert habitat does not support nearly as much wildlife as more verdant regions, sightings in this area are exceptional.
The Chobe National Park in Botswana is the country’s third largest reserve. It is located in northern Botswana, not far from the border with Zimbabwe, where you may visit the magnificent Victoria Falls. Large herds of elephants are one of the park’s main draws. There is a high concentration of animals around the Chobe River, making it an ideal location for game viewing.
Â
The well-known Okavango Delta also lies in Northern Botswana where wildlife roams that calls the huge, flooded grasslands there home. To avoid the crocodiles, hippos, and elephants, locals here use dugout canoes. You can navigate the rivers of the Okavango Delta in a mokoro (canoe).
Another must area to include in your tour is the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park which is situated south of the Nxai Pan National Park and forms with its huge salt pans an impressive surreal landscape.
The dry, predominantly winter season, which spans May–October, is the best time to visit Botswana, with pleasant daytime temperatures of 22°C to 35°C and cool night-time lows.
At this time of year, water levels in the Okavango Delta are at their peak, resulting in the formation of several rivers and channels.
When autumn arrives, animals seek out the final remaining source of water. Animals tend to congregate around watering holes, making them easy to spot. Even carnivores, like most animals, are more active during the day than they are at night.
