On Sundays, our regular township tour includes a few hours at a prominent Baptist Church located in the heart of Langa.
Reduced cancellation fees may apply (t&c)
The vibrant township church attracts hundreds of worshipers on Sundays, including members of the local community and overseas visitors.
Seats are limited as people far and wide flock to the township church to worship and the church is filled with the spine-tingling sound of African-style gospel singing and dancing. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet the regular church members and spend time chatting to them.
During good and bad times in South Africa, township churches have played an extremely important role in bringing together and uplifting communities. The congregations are energetic and dynamic and everyone is warmly welcomed. The soulful sounds of township gospel singing will echo in your heart long after you’ve left the township.
Langa Baptist Church in Langa
Langa is an urban settlement located on the outskirts of Cape Town City Bowl. It was established in 1927 in terms of the 1923 Urban Area Acts which saw the resettlement of Black people to these informal settlements. It’s the oldest township in South Africa and during the apartheid era, was the epicenter of resistance. Today, it’s known for its rich cultural spirit, warmth and sense of community.
After pick-up, we make our way to Langa Baptist Church located in the heart of the vibrant Langa township. Find a seat and enjoy the incredible sounds of African gospel singing. You can join in on the singing and dancing. The church experience is real, not staged and the what you feel will be uplifting and inspirational.
During the school/religious holidays (Easter and Christmas), many people in township communities travel back to their rural homes in the Eastern Cape. The numbers of churchgoers drop quite dramatically.
Time in Africa is relative, as you may have discovered on your holiday to South Africa. We have no control over what time the church service starts and ends. We suggest you arrive in Langa and enjoy whatever happens, without any time pressures.
