About Pilanesberg

Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa’s fourth largest game park, is situated in a crater in the Bojanala Region of the North West Province. This crater is the product of a volcano that erupted many millions of years ago. This extinct volcano has evolved to become one of the most fascinating landscapes for you to visit. By the Genesis project the majority of South Africa’s wildlife is now found in the Pilanesberg game reserve.

The park covers an area of 55 000 hectares. More than 7000 animals live here in a free and unhindered environment. Pilanesberg is home to all of the BIG 5 (elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion) and we guarantee that you will be able to tick off most on your list of game sightings! Other animals that you may encounter are zebra, giraffe, cheetah, hyena, hippo, crocodile, jackal, wild cat, various antelope as well as over 300 bird species…the list is endless.

Pilanesberg offers over 200 km of roads for guided or self-drive game viewing. On our tour you enjoy an extensive game drive conducted by an experienced and knowledgeable tour guide who will answer all your questions about the fascinating wildlife and environment. Bring your camera to have a permanent record of all the wild animals and the spectacular landscape this National Park has to offer.

Early morning pickup

Guests are picked up early in Johannesburg or Pretoria and driven to Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

Please note: The drive time from Johannesburg and Pretoria to Pilanesberg Game Reserve is between 2 to 3-hours long. However, it may take longer depending on where we pick up guests and morning traffic in that area. We also stop off along the route for refreshments and a quick breakfast meal (optional and for your own account).

Morning game drive

Arrive at Pilanesberg between 9h00-9h15. Your day in the game reserve starts with a 2½ to 3-hour game drive in our closed tour vehicle. The exact length of the game drive depends on whether you see an exciting animal sighting and spend a little bit longer at the sighting.

Lunch break

From 12h00 to 13h00, enjoy a light lunch and beverages (for your own account) at Pilanesberg Centre which overlooks a large waterhole. After the lunch break, we make our way to Manyane Resort or Bakgatla Resort (depending on where you are staying) to book in and drop your bags off.

Afternoon game drive

Your guide for the afternoon safari tour meets you mid-afternoon at Manyane or Bakgatla, between 16h00 and 16h30. Climb on board an open safari vehicle for a 2½ to 3-hour game drive (again, depends on what you see).

After a wonderful game drive, your guide returns you to the resort. Freshen up and relax before it’s time for dinner which is prepared by your guide.

Overnight in thatched chalets at Manyane Resort or Bakgatla Resort.

Includes: Dinner

Morning game drive

Wake up early for hot beverages and rusks before it’s time to depart for a 2½ to 3-hour sunrise game drive in an open safari vehicle. Again, the exact length of the game drive depends on what you see and how long you stop at animal sightings.

Return to Manyane or Bakgatla for a hearty breakfast prepared by your guide.

Mid-morning to mid-afternoon

At about 11h00, we pack up and leave the resort and head off into the bushveld in our closed tour vehicle for your last game drive in the Pilanesberg. We stop mid-day for lunch and refreshments at Pilanesberg Centre (for your own account) and then leave the game reserve for the return journey to Johannesburg.

Expect to arrive back in the city between 17h30 and 18h30. Exact timing depends on where you need to be dropped off and late-afternoon traffic.

Includes: Breakfast
