Description

This half-day private Pretoria tour takes you from Johannesburg to South Africa’s capital city to experience its historic sites and national monuments that tell the story of South Africa’s rich history.

The stately Union Buildings, the Voortrekker Monument, the Paul Kruger House Museum, Church Square, Ou Raadsaal, the Palace of Justice, and the Capitol Theatre are among the places you will visit.

The Union Buildings serve as the official seat of the South African government and also house the offices of the South African President. The imposing structures are situated on Meintjieskop at the northern end of Arcadia, close to historic Church Square in Pretoria.

The Voortrekker Monument is located on a hilltop just south of the city centre. The granite structure was built to honour the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854. Gerard Moerdijk was the architect who designed it.

Kruger House is the historic Pretoria home of Boer leader and South African Republic President Paul Kruger. It was designed by architect Tom Claridge and built by builder Charles Clark in 1884.

Church Square, formerly Market Square, is a square in the historic heart of Pretoria. Marthinus Pretorius, the city’s founder, decreed that the square be used as a marketplace and churchyard. The Ou Raadsaal is a historic building on the south side of Church Square that housed the Volksraad, the South African Republic’s parliament 1891 to 1902.

The Palace of Justice is part of the northern façade of Pretoria’s Church Square. Sytze Wierda, a Dutch architect, designed the building in the nineteenth century. It is currently the Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa’s headquarters. On the north-western corner of Church Square you will also see the ornate “atmospheric” Capitol Theatre that was built in 1931.

Your MoAfrika driver and guide will explain in detail the spectacular city architecture and historical events that occurred at the time.

Itinerary:

Guests are picked up by their private driver and guide in a closed vehicle from any location in Johannesburg or Pretoria and taken on a guided tour of the capital city’s highlights.

We go to the Union Buildings, which house the national government. You will be able to stroll through the lovely terraced gardens and enjoy a breath taking view of the city.

The Voortrekker Monument is our next stop. This monument is extremely important to many Afrikaans-speaking South Africans because it represents Afrikaner Nationalism. The interior walls depict the story of the Great Trek, a mass movement of Afrikaner Boers who marched north in protest of British rule in the Cape.

The Paul Kruger House Museum is the next interesting stop. Learn more about South Africa’s former president and see a display of furniture and personal items from the Kruger family.

The tour proceeds to Church Square, where you can walk around the Ou Raadsaal, the Palace of Justice, and the Capitol Theatre.

At the end of the tour, your driver and guide returns you to your hotel.

Visitors should note however that, although it is a private tour, the locations that are visited are open to the public, so there will be other visitors too that may enjoy the same sights and visit the same locations.
