Imagine the wild Africa of the first great explorers of this beautiful land, when blazing sunsets gave way to lantern-lit nights under the open sky filled with adventure, wonder and anticipation. These adventures and a deep love of this wild wilderness define Sabi Sabi’s magnificent Selati Camp, an award-winning luxury game lodge within the Sabi Sand Game Reseve, located in the heart of the iconic Kruger National Park in South Africa.
Gold was discovered in the Drakensberg escarpment, to the west of Sabi Sabi, in the 1870’s, necessitating a railway line from the interior to the then Delagoa Bay (Maputo) in Mozambique. This railway, known as the Selati Line, traversed the Sabi Sand Reserve.
Today the line lies in disuse, but parts of the railbed are still visible in the north-eastern section of Sabi Sabi, close to Selati Camp.
Situated on a bend of the Msuthlu River in the Sabi Sabi Game Reserve, under a canopy of gigantic riverine trees, is Sabi Sabi Selati Camp, where lovers of the authentic luxury Kruger Park safari can revel in the nostalgia of days gone by. Inspired by legends of lost bullions and the adventures of fearless wilderness pioneers, this exquisite camp is a celebration of the grand steam train era.
The “Out of Africa” feel of this pristine lodge is reflected in original memorabilia from this era, such as original steam engine number plates, railway signals, and shunter’s lamps, illuminating the way to your suite, as well as the wealth of collector’s pieces which adorn the main lodge and each luxurious room.
The main lodge boasts classic vintage interiors. From the opulent lounge area that spills onto the deck with its breathtaking views of the wilderness, the distinct character of “yesterday” defines each space. The Farmhouse Kitchen is the culinary heart of the lodge from where superb cuisine compliments the lodge’s safari offering. The bar is reminiscent of those of the gold-rush era where thirsty diggers gathered to enjoy a cold one, and one will be forgiven for expecting one of these rugged pioneers to walk through the door at any moment.
