Simbavati Safari Lodges is an exclusive safari destination located in the world-renowned Timbavati Private Nature Reserve which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa. Simbavati Safari Lodges is located in the upper north corner of the Timbervati Private Nature Reserve. The top northern corner of the nature reserve juts into the northern-central region of the Kruger National Park. The closest airports to Timbervati Private Nature Reserve are Phalaborwa Airport and Hoedspruit Airport. Guests can travel to Simbavati Safari Lodges by air or by road (via Nelspruit and Hazyview or via Ohrigstad and Hoedspruit).
Simbavati has three beautiful safari lodges and offers guests the choice of luxury safari tents, luxury suites and spacious family chalets. Each lodge is positioned to offer incredible views of the bushveld surroundings with panoramic vistas over of the Nhlaralumi River and the Drakensberg range of mountains in the hazy distance. Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is rich in wildlife and home to the Big 5 which includes elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and rhino. The private reserve is renowned for its incredible biodiversity and abundance of antelope, predators and birds. The protected wildlife sanctuary falls within an ecozone which was declared a UNESCO International Man and Biosphere Reserve. The region is rich in cultural history with archaeological sites showcasing signs of inhabitants from the Stone Age and Iron Age.
Timbavati Private Nature Reserve borders the western boundary of the Kruger National Park and falls within the Greater Kruger National Park. There are no fences between the Timbavati and the Kruger National Park which creates an incredible wildlife corridor for the animals. Guests staying Simbavati have exclusive use of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve as well as access to the Kruger National Park. On the other hand, visitors to the Kruger Park are not allowed entry into Timbavati Private Nature Reserve.

The name Simbavati comes from the Shangaans and means “the place where the lions come down from the stars”. Rates charged by Simbavati Safari Lodges include stylish accommodation, daily meals, a morning and evening game drive and selected beverages which includes local wines, spirits, beers and non-alcoholic drinks such as tea, coffee, fresh juices and carbonated soft drinks.
The rates exclude imported beverages, private transfers, gratuities, laundry services and other items of a personal nature. It also excludes the Timbavati conservation levy charged which needs to be pre-paid on confirmation of a booking and a vehicle entry fee which is payable at the Timbavati Control Gate.
Big 5 safari destination
Simbavati falls within the Greater Kruger National Park and guests staying at one of its three lodges have exclusive range of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve and access to the Kruger National Park. Simbavati is home to the Big 5 which includes elephants, buffalo, rhino, leopard and lion. This was the name given to the group of animals considered by hunters as the most dangerous to encounter in the bush. Today, the Big 5 is a major drawcard to private game reserves purely as magical sightings.
Guests staying at Simbavati Safari Lodges enjoy two game drives a day in the company of a professional game ranger and a highly experienced Shangaan tracker. Early morning game drives and late afternoon game drives are the best time to see animals in the bush, particularly on hot summer days when the game seeks shelter in the thicker bush shrub and riverine forests.
Cruising through the Greater Kruger National Park in an open safari vehicle with elevated views of the bushveld is a wonderful way to spot game. The resident white lions of Timbavati carry the recessive gene known as ‘chinchillia’ which is responsible for this unusual anomaly.

Photographic safaris at Simbavati
Simbavati Safari Lodges has partnered with Africa Photographic Services to offer novice and experienced photographers the ultimate photographic safari experience in the Greater Kruger National Park. Photographic safari packages are tailor-made to the unique interests of guests and their level of expertise.
Guests bring their own camera equipment or can hire either a Nikon or Canon camera from Africa Photographic Services. Bring your laptop with you as well as card readers and sufficient memory cards because the photographic safari package includes post-editing of photos. Photographic equipment needs to be rented by prior arrangement ahead of your visit. A limited supply of memory cards is available at the lodges.
The photographic safari groups are small and each person receives individual attention. All levels of experience are catered for in the group. Simbavati Safari Lodges offer photographic safari tours on set departure dates. If you can’t make any of the dates on the set schedule, you can book a private booking with or without a professional instructor. For the latter, a private game ranger will take you out for your own personal photographic safari tour with exclusive use of a private open safari vehicle.
The open safari vehicles used for photographic safari tours are specially adapted for photographers’ needs. This includes swivel seats, special camera mountings and low sides for not-to-be-missed photographic opportunities.
Photographic safari packages on set dates includes 4-nights accommodation in a luxury suite, all daily meals, personal tuition by a professional instructor, an adapted open safari vehicle, daily game drives, pre-tour briefing and post-production editing services.

Accommodation at Simbavati Hilltop Lodge offers guests a unique African safari experience with guests staying in individual luxury tents which are arranged to create the illusion of an authentic tribal village. Each luxury tent has two individual compartments; one for the main bedroom and a separate bathroom which is linked via short passage. The tents lead out onto a private deck with an outdoor shower.
The units are carefully placed and your privacy is guaranteed. A few suites are positioned higher up the hill and reached by steep stairs. If you can’t manage to walk up steep stairs, please mention this to the person taking your booking.
The luxury tents, suites and family chalets are air-conditioned and there’s a ceiling fan for added relief from the heat.
All units have a mini bar with drinks and snacks and a coffee/tea-making unit.
Electric blankets are provided in winter and eco-friendly insect spray is supplied year-round.
A safe for storing passports and valuables is available in each unit.

Facilities at the main lodge include a sparkling infinity pool and a covered pool lounge with a shaded outdoor patio. For evening entertainment, there is the 360º bar and a lounge with a selection of books and board games. Wi-Fi is available in the reception, lounge and outdoor deck areas. Simbavati Hilltop Lodge also has a well-stocked curio shop.
Breakfast and lunch are served outside on the wooden deck in the shade of old Jackalberry and Leadwood trees. Meals are prepared by an executive chef and are a delicious combination of authentic African and western cuisine. Guests enjoy dinner around the campfire at night in an open-air “boma”.

There is a children’s activity room in the main lodge which has a selection of toys and board games suitable for kids. Children are also given an activity booklet when they arrive and a set of coloured pencils is available from reception.
Simbavati River Lodge organises guided bushwalks for youngsters in the company of a game ranger who takes them of a short walk around the camp to spot animal tracks and learn more about the bushveld.
Children between 6 and 12 years may join the daily game drives at the discretion of the game ranger in charge of the group. Younger children may only go on a private game drive with immediate family and friends which needs to be pre-booked prior.
Babysitting for young children is available on request and is not included in the daily rate.

Machaton Private Camp accommodates up to 10 people in 3 individual luxury suites. Each suite is air-conditioned and has an ensuite bathroom as well as an outdoor shower.

Machaton Private Camp features a spacious lounge and a well-equipped kitchen that leads out onto a large outdoor deck with its own plunge pool.
This delightful safari camp offers guests complete privacy, away from the main safari lodges on the reserve. The luxury suites are carefully positioned so it’s all about complete peace and tranquility. The lodge and suites overlook the Nhlaralumi River with regular sightings of the Big 5 and an array of antelope coming down to the water’s edge every day.
There is a small library in the lounge area as well as a selection of board games.

The daily rate charged for Machaton Private Camp includes the use of an open safari vehicle and a professional game range, bush tracker, a butler and chef, housekeeper and groundsman.
Guests have free range of 12 000 hectares of pristine bushveld in the Timbervati Private Nature Reserve as well as easy access to the Kruger National Park. Guided bush walks with a professional game range can be booked ahead of time as well as a photographic safari tour.
It’s ideal to book Machaton Private Camp on an exclusive-use basis for one family or a group of friends but it can be booked on a per suite basis.
There is limited Wi-Fi connectivity. Cellphone signal in the Simbavati is not very strong but you can pick up stronger signal in other areas of the Greater Kruger National Park.
Machaton Private Camp is protected by a low-level electric fence but guests are warned to be careful of dangerous animals such as leopards coming into the camp.

Malaria warning for Simbavati
Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is regarded as a medium-to-high risk malaria area. Malaria is a life-threatening disease and needs to be taken seriously in all bushveld regions in South Africa. It is recommended that you speak to your GP or travel clinic for advise on malaria prevention and consider taking anti-malaria medication.
If not taking a prophylactic for malaria, be strict about spraying mosquito repellent and wear long shirts and pants with socks and shoes in the evening if dining or sitting outside. All suites have mosquito nets in the bedrooms.
Best time of the year to visit Simbavati
The time of year you go on safari tour in southern Africa really depends on what you are interested in seeing or doing on your trip.
The best time for game viewing is in the cooler winter months; May to August. The bush thins out as it gets drier and the grass is not too thick. This is good for game spotting. Winter temperatures in the bushveld are mild and pleasant but it does it get very chilly at night.
Another important point about the winter months in the bushveld is the risk of malaria decreases significantly and there are fewer pesky insects around.
Summer in southern Africa is the raining season; October to February. There’s nothing like a might African thunderstorm but the rain drives the animals deeper into the bush, which is thicker at that time anyway. It’s not the best time for game viewing but it is a lovely time of the year to be in the bush. The bush comes alive after the rains with the sounds of birds, frogs and bush insects. You’ll also see loads of baby animals.

SA Express and Airlink offer scheduled flights from OR Tambo International Airport to Hoedspruit/Eastgate Airport. The transfer from Hoedspruit to Simbavati takes approximately 90 minutes and can be booked ahead of schedule through the reservations office.
Guests have the option of flying to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) on the outskirts of Nelspruit or Phalaborwa Airport. A shuttle bus will transfer guests to Simbavati Safari Lodges.
There is an airstrip at Timbervati Private Nature Reserve and a private air charter can drop off guests by prior arrangement. Simbavati Safari Lodges will organise a complimentary transfer vehicle to collect and drop guests off at the airstrip. These arrangements need to be made at the time of your booking.

The road trip from Johannesburg to Simbavati Safari Lodges in the Timbervati is approximately 7 hours long with stops for fuel and lunch.
Timbervati Private Nature Reserve charges a vehicle entrance fee.
