V&A Waterfront Harbour Cruise

The V&A Waterfront harbour cruise is one of the best ways to experience the oldest working harbour in South Africa.

On a 25-minute boat cruise, you’ll learn about the fascinating history of the Port of Cape Town located in the breathtakingly-beautiful Table Bay.

Due to its position along one of the world’s busiest trade routes, Port of Cape Town is one of the busiest ports in South Africa, handling the largest amount of fresh fruit shipping and second only to Durban as a container port. You have a stunning view of Table Mountain from the V&A Waterfront harbour as well as Devil’s Peak, Lion’s Hill and Signal Hill.

There are many attractions awaiting you on this tour, not forgetting adorable sightings of the Cape Fur seals that frolic around the boats in the harbour waters.

One popular attraction to visit before meeting your guide for the harbour tour is the SAS Somerset. It’s a famous ship museum at the V&A Waterfront and the world’s last remaining boom defense vessel. Built in 1941, it was known as Ship No 280 when it operated in Saldanha Bay.

The Bascule Bridge is the largest synchro-lift and only harbour drawbridge in the southern hemisphere. The drawbridge crosses the harbour waters to the Clock Tower. In earlier days, the Penny Ferry rowing boat was used to ferry captains of ships across to the Clock Tower.

The Clock Tower at the Port of Cape Town was the Port Captain’s office and little has been done to modernise its appearance, reminding us of what it looked like when it was built in 1882.

Other things to look forward to on a tour of Cape Town’s famous harbour are remarkable views of the iconic Table Mountain, wander around the exhibition area at Nelson Mandela Gateway and learn more about the fortification of Cape Town in the 18th century at the Chavonnes Battery Museum.
