Highlights:

  • Guided Hikes
  • 3 Different Routes to choose from
  • Spend time in nature

Description:

Join us for a full-day hike with an experienced mountaineering guide to explore the iconic Table Mountain. You have the choice of three popular routes to the summit; Skeleton Gorge, Kasteelspoort and Tranquility Cracks.

Each route is challenging but manageable if you’re reasonably fit and the reward of spectacular panoramic views of the city and glistening Atlantic Ocean is worth every drop of sweat when you get to the top.

What is Table Mountain?

Table Mountain is a towering flat-topped mountain that is a prominent natural landmark overlooking the City of Cape Town in South Africa. It falls within the Table Mountain National Park which forms part of the UNESCO Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site.

Itinerary:

Table Mountain Full Day Hikes

Skeleton Gorge • Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens to Upper Cableway Station

Length of hike: 13 kms/ 7-9 hours

This is a longer and more strenuous hike than the direct routes up Table Mountain. It’s a full-day hike and requires a good fitness level.

We set off from Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The majority of the climb takes place in a dense montane forest. It’s cool in summer but can get cold in the shade of the trees in winter.

After a surprising visit to the beach at the top of Skeleton Gorge, the route follows a path to the Maclear’s Beacon which is the highest point on Table Mountain. It continues along the length of the Tabletop and ends at the Upper Cableway Station. Spend time enjoying the summit views and having something to eat and drink at the restaurants on top of the mountain (own cost).

We take the Aerial Cableway down to the Lower Cableway Station. You can take an Uber to fetch your car at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (cableway and Uber not included in price).

If the Cableway is closed due to strong winds, we hike down Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge (no extra charge).

The Nursery Ravine offers hikers an alternative route back to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens if you don’t have time to hike across to the Cableway and take an Uber back to fetch your car.

Kasteelpoort • Camps Bay to Upper Cableway Station via 12 Apostles

Length of hike: 6 kms/ 6-8 hours

This is a comfortable hike that is less steep and less busy than the popular hikes to the top of Table Mountain. It takes you to the summit of the famous 12 Apostles and ends at the Upper Cableway Station. The Kasteelpoort route takes longer than the direct routes so set aside the whole day to enjoy this rewarding hike.

We set off from a meeting point just above Camps Bay. The ascent offers amazing views of the glistening Atlantic Ocean, Lion’s Head, the 12 Apostles and the seaside suburbs. We stop for breaks and photos at vantage points, including the famous ‘diving board’ for those daring enough to sit on the exposed ledge.

You have time at the Upper Cableway Station to explore, have a meal and drinks at one of the restaurants and even do a bit of shopping. We take the Aerial Cableway down to Lower Cableway Station. You can take an Uber to where you left your car.

If the Cableway is closed due to strong winds, we hike down Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge (no extra charge).

Diagonal Route and Oudekraal Ravine offer hikers an alternative route back to Camps Bay if you don’t have time to hike across to the Cableway and take an Uber back to fetch your car.

Tranquility Cracks • Camps Bay to 12 Apostles via Corridor Ravine

Length of hike: 13 kms/ 6- 8 hours

This hike takes you from Camps Bay to the upper reaches of the beautiful 12 Apostles which forms the back of Table Mountain and overlooks one of the most magnificent stretches of coastline in southern Africa.

We spend time exploring the upper reaches of the mountain range and walk down the mountain rather than taking the Aerial Cableway. This means the descent is tougher than other routes.

We set off from the Pipe Track at the entrance to Camps Bay and enjoy a gradual and pleasant climb to the bottom of Corridor Ravine. On top, we take a hidden route to Tranquility Cracks which is a series of tunnels, cracks and caves with panoramic views of Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

If you’re brave enough, you can have your photo taken on the famous Diving Board, an exposed ledge that juts out the side of the mountain. We descend down the scenic Kasteelpoort route, back to the starting point.
