Itinerary

Day 1 - Table Mountain Full Day Hikes

Hike Options :

India Venster Hiking Trail – Morning hike +-3.5hrs
Named after the 'Venster' or ‘Window’, this hike offers stunning city and ocean views on clear days. Adventurous scrambles provide a fun challenge, with chances to spot Starlings, Sunbirds, and Dassies, alongside rock climbers. The trail showcases diverse indigenous fynbos from the Cape Floral Kingdom. This hike is suitable for children.

Kasteelspoort Hiking Trail – Morning hike +-5hrs
Kasteelspoort, meaning ‘Castle’s Portal’, rewards hikers with expansive ocean views and scenes of Lion’s Head and the 12 Apostles. A breakfast stop at the Instagram-worthy Surfboard adds a delightful pause. Watch for local wildlife such as Starlings, Sunbirds, Tahrs, and the elusive Caracal against a backdrop of colourful fynbos. This moderate five-hour route, starting at 7:30am, is ideal for active families and adventurers alike.

Lion’s Head Sunrise/Sunset Hike – Late afternoon hike – 3.5hrs
Drawing its name from early Dutch references, Lion’s Head offers a splendid panorama, including views of Table Mountain, V & A Waterfront, the 12 Apostles, and Robben Island when conditions are favourable. You can choose between a route with chains and staples for the more daring or a longer, safer alternative. Along the way, spot Starlings, Sunbirds, Dassies, mongoose, and even the occasional paraglider, all amid a vibrant array of indigenous fynbos. This hike is suitable for children.

Platteklip Gorge Hike – Morning hike +- 3hrs
Regarded as the most direct route up Table Mountain, Platteklip Gorge is both challenging and rewarding. The ascent follows a zig zag staircase, where a variety of fynbos, impressive city views, and glimpses of the Hottentot’s Holland Mountain Ranges are on offer. Wildlife such as mountain goats and occasionally Caracals may be seen. The route starts along Tafelberg Road and, after reaching the top, the descent is ideally made via Cable Car—subject to weather conditions.

Skeleton Gorge Hiking Trail - Morning hike +-6hrs
Skeleton Gorge is renowned as one of Cape Town’s most scenic trails. Beginning at Kirstenbosch Gardens, the route is mostly shaded by lush Afromontane forest, offering respite from the summer sun and a unique, sometimes wet experience in winter. Caution is required as boulders and ladders may be slippery after rain. This moderate, approximately six-hour hike ends with a descent via Cable Car, though a foot descent via Nursery Ravine may be necessary if conditions demand.
