It’s an opportunity to learn more about events that shaped the country’s past and discover the dynamic cultural diversity of two of the most prominent cities in the country.

Highlights of the Johannesburg tour includes Constitutional Hill, Carlton Centre, the Apartheid Museum and the vibrant Newtown Junction.

In Soweto, we journey past striking landmarks and historic sites, visit an informal settlement and the Hector Pieterson Museum and ends in the vibrant Vilakazi Street which was home of the great Nelson Mandela.

City Experience

Constitutional Hill

After pick-ups, we make our way to Constitutional Hill in Braamfontein for a guided tour of this iconic institution.

Constitution Hill is a living museum that tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy. The site is a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past. Today, it’s home to the country’s Constitutional Court which endorses the rights of all citizens.

Mandela Bridge and Johannesburg CBD

We cross over the striking Mandela Bridge on our way into Johannesburg CBD. Named in honour of Nelson Mandela, the 284-metre long bridge is the largest cable-stayed bridge in South Africa and links two significant business districts.

Your guide gives you an orientation tour of Johannesburg, pointing out historic landmarks and buildings which includes Newtown Precinct, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Gandhi Square and Luthuli House.

Carlton Centre

First stop in Johannesburg for a tour of the impressive Carlton Centre. The 50-storey, 223-metre tall skyscraper and shopping centre is the second-tallest building in Africa. From the top, you have a panoramic view of the city of Johannesburg and the northern suburbs.

Apartheid Museum

Next stop is the Apartheid Museum. It’s a one-of-its-kind museum that showcases South Africa in the turbulent years of the apartheid era.

The museum illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid through a series of 22 individual exhibitions that take you on an emotional journey from the heartbreaking struggle for freedom and equality to the ultimate climax of the election of Nelson Mandela, the first Black president of South Africa.

It’s mid-day by the time we visit the Apartheid Museum. You can get something to eat and drink at the Truth Café (own cost).

We leave the museum at about 14h00 and make our way to Soweto, driving past famous landmarks such as the FNB Soccer Stadium, Baragwanath Hospital and the massive Soweto Towers.

The afternoon tour covers the important heritage sites in Soweto that commemorate the city’s struggles during the apartheid era, and the popular streets and markets that showcase the vibrant, multi-cultural lifestyle of Soweto.

Our first stop is at Motsoaledi informal settlement, where we go on a walk-about and visit a community centre that MoAfrika sponsors (time permitting).

Our next stop is the Hector Pieterson Museum which was built in honor of the young boy and other school children who died in the 1976 Soweto Uprising.

You also have the option of walking through the Regina Mundi Church and Nelson Mandela Museum (own cost) as we make our way to the cultural hub of Vilakazi Street and the historic suburb of Orlando West.

At the end of a fascinating day, your guide drives you back to your accommodation in Johannesburg.

Brilliant day out!

Joined a day tour from Johannesburg for full day, including lunch, in an open vehicle. Picked up at 06:30 from hotel in Sandton and arrived at the reserve just after 9am, this included a 20 minute comfort break en route. Bus was comfortable enough and offered free WiFi for those that needed it. Loaded in to the jeeps when we got there ready to set off on safari for 09:30. The guide, whose name I forget, was great right from the start....funny, engaging and clearly very knowledgeable, how he spots some of these animals in the distance is unbelievable. There were plenty of choices on the set menu for lunch and a free soft drink came with it as well. We were very lucky with the number of different animals we saw and how many of them there were.....obviously not everyone gets that lucky but we saw at least 20 different species including elephants, hippos , black and white rhino, lions, leopards, giraffes and wart hogs. Would highly recommend MoAfrika for one of these tours, reasonably priced and it was a really good day!

A perfect day at the park!

I very much enjoyed a wonderful day at the nationalpark "Pilanesberg" with the entertaining driver "Dennis" and the very knowledgeable guide "Hermann". I saw and learned a lot on this tour. Thank you! (Only remark i would have: Include the afternoon ride with the open jeep in the total price from the start and don't add a surcharge during the trip)

The big 5

What an almost wonderful day. Mother nature was not in our favor with the heat on day 1 it was HOT! Day 2 it cooled down and the big 5 was an amazing site to behold. A great day or 2 day visit patience is a virtue. Remember that even though it's a national park it is still the cycle of life. Definitely would recommend a visit if you don't have time to visit Kruger Park.

Absolutely superb with outstanding support

This was the first time that I had been on a safari trip and has really given me an appetite for more. The interaction with and support from MoAfrica really went the extra mile. First of all the safari... I chose the Full Day Ultimate package as it seemed to offer the best experience for the price and I was delighted. The online booking process was easy with efficient and swift response. My pick-up time from the friend's address I was staying at in Sandton was 0615-0630hrs and the minibus arrived at 0620hrs. The previous pickups confirmed that their timing was equally accurate. The minibus was clean and the driver helpful and courteous, including telling us that we would have a comfort break after about 1hr20min driving - perfect for a coffee on the way after an early start. On arrival at the Pilanesburg we were met by our vehicles and guides/driver for the day. The safari was brilliant. We saw the Big Five within a couple of hours and even the guides were excited, taking photos themselves on occasion. What you see on the trip is very much down to luck, however we were really lucky on our day. Watching a leopard lunching on its kill from about 10 feet away was incredible. Plenty of non Big Five animals as well and I took lots and lots of photos, with the guides making sure that everyone got the best pictures possible. Our guide was very knowledgeable and provided lots of interesting information. The menu choice for lunch was good and a burger and chips was great for me. A lion killing a warthog for its own lunch in front of the eating area made the lunch break all the more memorable. The journey back at the end of the day was fine with a stop-off at a touristy souvenir market for those who had the energy to broach this. Just after I was dropped off at my pick-up address (and tipped the driver) I realised that I had left my wallet in the minibus. Cash, cards, driving licence etc. The reaction from MoAfrica could not have been better. A call to them (at about 7pm) who then called the driver who located my wallet and notified me. I felt relieved straight away. The driver (and MoAfrica) literally went out of their way to return the wallet to my address the following day. Everything from MoAfrica was perfect and my South African friends will be recommending them to others in the future. Value for money, the experience and the service all superb. Thank you!

A wonderful guide and an interesting tour

MoAfrica, the tour company offering the tour messed our reservation up. We were supposed to be picked up at our hotel between 8:15 and 8:30. When 9:00 came around and no pick up, we called the company. They didn’t have us down. A driver was sent to pick us up and we joined the tour around 9:45. After that, the tour was fantastic. Our guide, Stan, was one of the best I’ve ever had. He was knowledgeable and always interesting. I strongly recommend this tour, but make sure the company has your information. Keep their phone number just in case.

Johannesburg from A to Z

Our guide, Sugar, is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate about his city. This is a full-on tour that covers a number of locations and there was a lot to take in. Constitution Hill is a real eye-opener and the apartheid museum is boggling in its depth of coverage, and beautifully curated. I spent so long at the Nelson Mandela exhibit that I did not leave enough time for the major part of the museum. They have a great café there too. The visit to Soweto Township was not as depressing as I had expected but also sobering in parts. There wasn’t enough time to absorb all the information at the Hector Pieterson Museum but that was an inspiring visit too. All in all, this was a brilliant day that gave me a good grasp of Johannesburg, past and present.

All around Joburg!

This is the perfect tour for the first time visit to Joburg! Sure, you can always try the jump on/jump off bus if you prefer to do things yourself, but if you want a fully guided tour that will handle all the driving and parking and logistics, then this is the most convenient way to do so. Plus, when you get to Soweto, the locally based guides will set you up nicely with their own personal connections and experiences to add a bit more to your tour so that's something you won't get if you decide to go by yourself. The MoAfrika team was great. On this tour, they are the ones handling everything and don't really hand you off to another group (like for the Safari excursion). Again, their personal experiences had knowledge of local history, culture, and politics really add to the highlights of this tour. Quick note: bring snacks if you're likely to get hungry. There's so much to see during this day. No official lunch stop is planned. You will have time to get something to eat at the Apartheid Museum. There is a cafe/restaurant that serves food (table service/to-go available) but if you spend too much time wandering the museum you may not have time to eat! On-board WiFi did not work that great. I have a great phone plan so I didn't need it. On our particular tour date, the lift at the Carlton Center was out so we did not get to experience the Top of Africa. Well, there are stairs but our group decided we didn't want to hike up those! Instead, our guide took us into a different area of Joburg and gave us a bit more history and his personal experience which was great. We started at Constitution Hill where we visited the Old Fort Prison Complex also known as Number 4. The guide there took us on a highlight tour that was by no means short however we did skip what looked like an introductory film which I was interested in seeing. This was the first time I wished we spent more time at a single location however I had to remind myself that if we spent too much time in one area, we would not have time for other things! I would have loved to have visited the women's prison as well - but again, time constraints. After visiting the prison, we walked over to the new Constitutional Court. Impressively designed with every detail and piece of art installed with meaning and purpose. We traveled though Newtown and visited the Chancellor's House - where Mandela and Tambo practiced law. After Constitution Hill we were supposed to have gone to the Carlton Center but as I mentioned already, there was no lift since the power was out. These were lovely alternatives that our guide took us to and his insight and knowledge of the area really made it come alive. We made our way to the Apartheid Museum. We spent about 3 hours here. For me, it was not enough. For some it was plenty. If you really want to absorb the information here then you will need more time. This is where tour participants can get something to eat at the cafe! After here, we passed by the JNB stadium for a photo op. Then it was off to Soweto. The MoAfrika guides are from Soweto so I think I heard a bit of pride and ownership during our tour whenever our guide spoke of the happenings in this area. It made this portion of the tour even more special. We drove through the various parts of the expansive township, from the upper to the lower class neighborhoods. We made our way to Vilakazi street where some of the group visited Mandela's house. While others engaged with the street vendors. Eventually we made it to the Hector Pieterson memorial and museum. Again, our tour guide excelled here in explaining the tragic history and worldwide impact of this incident. This would be another location I wish we had more time but it was the end of our day and the end of our tour. So as a highlight tour of the city, it was perfect. And it made me want to see and learn more! Unfortunately, there were not enough days in my visit so at least I know where I will need to go if i ever return! And I'll contact MoAfrika tours for a private guide!

Amazing experience to know Johanesburg

MoAfrika guide (Mr. Tsholo) was on time to get us at the hotel. During all tour he explained in details about Johanesburg visited points. He was very compromised to know about our feelings in order to improve our experience and make us comfortable. We had a real life time at Soweto, with a person who lives there, it simply opened our minds about some questions and how Apartheid impacted that country. We strongly recommend!

We used Moafrika tours to help us on our trip around Newtown as we don't know the area well. If it wasn't for Tsholo and Thabang I would have been like a fish out of water, a headless chicken or a any other colorful adjectives you can think of. Their calmness as 70 children ran circles around me was just the breath of fresh air I needed. Thank you for the wonderful day and I look forward to using you again next year

Worth every penny. Fantastic Day

This was an absolute perfect way to spend the day in Johannesburg. We were able to see the Mandela house, the Apartheid Museum, Soweto, and some other really good local places. All of which give you a true feeling of what Johannesburg is. The tour guides were very friendly and very informative. They made the day go by very comfortably and securely. Mo Afrika tours are awesome and this is a great example

Day tour to Johannesburg on Sat 10 November

The tour was well organised and we visited a number of interesting places. Most significant was the Constitutional Hill with a rather sobering insight in the history of SA when visiting the old prison. Downtown Johannesburg was very interesting too, seeing the changes... so much cleaner and safer. The views over Jburg from Carlton Centre were amazing. Apartheid museum, Hektor Pieterson memorial, the towers in Soweto and Vilakazi street were fascinating too. Can only recommend MoAfrica Tours.

The day well spent. Excellent experience with the tour.

Bobo and his associate did an excellent job showing the inside out of many hot spots. Bobo knows everyone in town. He found us great spot for photo taking. He knows the city very well to avoid traffic. He and his associate explains the history of different parts of cities while driving from one spot to the other. They took us to a local spot for lunch and it was delicious, just say it was ten times better than the dinner at the hotel. Many tour might offer the similar places to go, Bobo and his associate made the trip memorable. Both of them really enjoy what they do and they have great sense of humor, which made the day trip so much more enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Day packed full of interesting activities with a friendly, informative guide

MoAfrika were very helpful beforehand with reminder texts for the pickup and responding to queries on WhatsApp. The tour guide Nick was from Soweto, really friendly and knowledgeable. There was a group of 7 on the day I went, all very nice people and it felt well organised and safe You cover a good amount in a day, from the roof of Africa (Carlton Centre) to the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and Soweto including Orlando Towers, Hector Peterson Memorial and a visit to one of the poorer areas of Soweto so you get to see what it's like and make a donation. It's great that a portion of the tour fee goes to the families in the township. There is also an optional visit to Nelson Mandela's house The guide was very knowledgeable and it was great to see so much in one day on the Ultimate Johannesburg Tour; in a safe way with other friendly people from couples to families and solo travellers. There was just about enough time for everything, although there is so much to see in the Apartheid museum so there's not too much time to hang around if you want to get round and see a good amount in 2.5 hrs! Very professional tour company who care about providing a great service, would definitely recommend! Thank you

Ultimate Day Tour

Just returned from a fantastic day tour with Nicholas from MoAfrica. The tour was fantastic and a great overview if you have limited time in the city. It also felt really safe as Nicholas has good relationships with everyone, everywhere we went. I could easily have spent days in the museums do wouldn't hesitate going back to these by Uber. I would highly recommend this tour and Nicholas also.

Best Way to Get Introduced to Johannesburg

This tour is a long day packed with sites and experiences. We were picked up at our hotel on time, in a van that could have been a bit cleaner. But move past that, put on some good walking shoes and enjoy what this long day has to offer. You will be taken to every site stated in the description, and for those leery about venturing about Johannesburg this is best way to be introduced to what this city has to offer. You will get enough time at Constitution Hill and the museums to get your feet wet but you will likely want to revisit to them, as they are that impactful. There are sufficient opportunities to take some great photos and the pace is not rushed but you will be reminded of the time to be kept on schedule. Suggestions: bring your own water and snacks, again this is a long day. If possible, purchase or have lunch at the Apartheid museum’s restaurant. The food is good, and the time/distance between your next destinations is sufficient enough that you can eat it in the van as you will not be having a formal lunch stop.

A great way to see and learn a lot in a day.

We took the 1day Ultimate Joburg tour which includes Constitution Hill area, Apartheid Museum and Soweto plus other shorter stops. It was a great way to cover a lot of ground with a very knowledgeable guide and lots of interesting information. The pick up from the hotel was bang on time and I felt that we were well looked after throughout the day. I'm doing another day tour with MoAfrika and would happily recommend them.

Full day tour to Johannesburg and Soweto

We very much enjoyed our day tour to Johannesburg and Soweto with our very enthusiastic guide Thabang. We started at Constitution Hill and prison number four, went to the Apartheidsmuseum, and headed down to Soweto were we experienced all the faces of this living township.

A great way to see the highlights of Johannesburg

Booked the ultimate day trip directly as I hoped to see the highlights of the city. It definitely met my expectations. With this tour, you get to see the Constitution Hill, Carlton Center, Apartheid Museum and Soweto - including passing Desmond Tutu's house and Nelson Mandela's house. You can also pay to visit inside Nelson Mandela's house and there is a free guided tour. You really only need 15-20 minutes to do that. The Hector Pieterson Memorial is poignant but I could have happily missed the museum in favour of spending more time at the Apartheid Museum.

Hit and miss - luck of the draw

I'd seen good reviews for this trip and overall I'm pleased. It was a lot to pack into one day, especially with picking up people from different locations. The van we were picked up by was well worn and cramped as we were full to capacity. The air con didn't make much of an impact either. Our guide tshoto and Lawrence were very polite and enthusiastic, answering all questions. Unfortunately, we were told we were short of time and it was suggested we skip the visit to the tallest building. As the majority wanted more time at the museum it was decided to miss out that particular attraction, which was a shame. The museum was very confusing to navigate and we had a long time there. Overall we got a lot of information out of the trip but the standard of travel offered by moafrika varies from trip to trip.
