Vilakazi Street
Both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu lived in Vilakazi Street. Both men won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and 1984 respectively. Madiba’s home is known today as the Mandela House Museum and is open to the public. Vilakazi Street is the entertainment hub of Soweto and a vibrant place to visit and meet the friendly people of Soweto.
Hector Pieterson Museum
Hector Pieterson was a South African schoolboy who was shot and killed by police during the 1976 Soweto Uprisings, a peaceful student protest that turned violent and brought the plight of Black South Africans enduring brutal rule during the apartheid era to the world’s attention. At the museum you can learn more about the history of the anti-Apartheid struggle that played out in the streets of Soweto.
Orlando Towers
The Orlando Towers are two cooling towers painted in bright colours, with reminders of the local lifestyle. They are what remain of a massive power station. Today, tourists can bungee jump 100 metres from the suspension bridge between the towers or do the highest SCAD freefall in the world.
African-style lunch
Lunch at the Outdoor Restaurant is a unique cultural experience. Stews, known as “potjie” in Afrikaans, and curries are prepared on a fire and served inside a hollowed-out loaf bread. This is known as a “bunny chow”. An alternative to bread is “pap” or maize porridge.
You can opt for a buffet with the various stews, a traditional barbeque, referred to as a “braai”, and side salads.
The braai buffet it only available for groups of 5 or more. The potjiekos buffet can be booked for 1 or more guests.
We also offer a buffet and traditional beer tasting tour, which can be booked without the tour at R 250 per person.
