A 5-day Garden Route and Addo group adventure tour with an experienced and reputable touring company is a safe and affordable way to explore the Western Cape, Little Karoo, Whale Route, Addo Elephant National Park, and Route 62. This tour starts and ends in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and departs every Monday. It offers a stunning mix of nature, culture and adventure, so you can experience the very best of what the Garden Route has to offer

Accommodation

You will stay at places that were hand-picked over the years because of how clean, interesting, and welcoming they are. The exact establishments will depend on group size and availability. Both private en suite rooms and shared dorms with mixed-gender dormitories are available to guests at guest houses and backpackers’ lodges respectively. In the guesthouses and backpackers, you can find single, double, and twin rooms. Towels and bedding are included. Backpackers and guesthouses do not typically have heating or air conditioning (because it is generally not necessary in South Africa). Younger customers seeking a little more energy will prefer backpackers due to their more sociable atmosphere. Despite the low prices, the quality of backpackers in South Africa is usually top-notch. A guest house offers a more secluded, peaceful, and opulent alternative to hotels. About 80% of guests choose to stay in the backpackers and 20% in the guest houses. The same tour vehicle carries both guests of guest houses and backpackers. Backpackers and guests stay in the same place on days 2 and 4 of the tour: a working citrus orchard near Addo and a working game farm near Oudtshoorn.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Cape Town - Hermanus - Cape Agulhas

At the crack of dawn on Monday morning, you will be picked up in Cape Town's central area or at the airport. You travel to Hermanus along the picturesque coastline and stop at Betties Bay to see a colony of African penguins, which are in danger of extinction. Hermanus is a popular seaside resort town that hosts hundreds of Southern Right Whales from July to November. The town also has numerous restaurants, shops, and markets, making it an ideal place to spend an afternoon. You will continue your journey towards the southernmost point of Africa, Cape Agulhas, where you will stop at the "genuine" spot where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans converge. Note that customers who opt to dive in shark cages will have to wake up extra early to catch the diving operator's early morning pickup, meaning they will not have time to see Hermanus and the African Penguin Colony on Day 1. Overnight accommodation in Agulhas or Struisbaai, dinner, and the visit to the penguins are included in your package and the following optional activities are available (prices approximate):

  • Shark cage diving: R 4055
  • Whale watching boat trip (in season, July - November): R 1440

Day 2 - Cape Agulhas - Oudtshoorn

From Cape Agulhas you take the lovely Route 62, the lengthiest wine route in South Africa, to Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo, also called the Ostrich Capital of the World. Before settling into your lodgings on a Little Karoo game farm, you will enjoy a delightful lunch and wine tasting at a nearby winery. While the sun sets, you can take a tour of the ostrich farm while gazing at the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges. Overnight accommodation on a working game farm in the Oudtshoorn area, breakfast and dinner, and the following activities are included in your package: Local wine tasting and Klein Karoo ostrich farm tour.

Day 3 - Oudtshoorn - Wilderness - Sedgefield

After breakfast you will cross the magnificent Outeniqua Mountain pass and go to explore Wilderness National Park with canoes. As you float up the Touw River, you will pass through native forests and see a plethora of birds. The canoes will be left after forty minutes for a two-kilometre boardwalk hike to a beautiful waterfall and rock pools. Later you will travel to Sedgefield to enjoy the town’s beautiful beach. Overnight accommodation in Sedgefield, breakfast and dinner, as well as canoeing and hiking in Wilderness National Park is included in your package.

Day 4 - Sedgefield - Knysna - Tsitsikamma - Addo

The Lake District on the Garden Route will be on your route today as you travel to the renowned town of Knysna. To get a bird's-eye view of the Indian Ocean and the Knysna River estuary, you will go to the Knysna Heads lookout. Your next stop will be at Bloukrans Bridge (216 meters), the highest bungee jump bridge in the world. Those who are looking for an adventure can test your mettle at your leisure. Tsitsikamma National Park, with its stunning coastline and native forest, is the perfect place to spend the middle of the day. Among the many things to do in the park are swimming, hiking, and even a suspension bridge over the Storms River. You We will depart from there and leave the Garden Route for Addo, in Big Five country, in the afternoon. Overnight accommodation in the Addo area, breakfast and dinner, as well as entrance to Tsitsikamma National Park are included in your package. The 216 m Bloukrans bungee jump is optionally available for approximately R 1690.

Day 5 - Addo - Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)

In the morning, you will go on a safari through Addo Elephant National Park. In this 28,000-hectare national reserve, you will see a wide variety of animals, including around 600 elephants, a few Cape buffalo, lions, black rhinos, warthogs, zebras, eland, kudu, hartebeests, and many more. This safari can last anywhere from two to three hours and the tour will conclude in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) at around 13:00–14:00 after an exciting morning of game viewing. Note that an extra safari experience is available to guests who want to extend their 5-Day Garden Route tour. This extra safari takes place at a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape, about an hour away from the tour's end. Your package doesn’t include any meals but does include entrance and the 2 3-hour drive with the tour vehicle through Addo Elephant National Park. Optionally, you can add a 2-hour open-vehicle game drive with an Addo field guide at approximately R 540.
* Please note that this itinerary can also happen in a different order.
