7 Day Madikwe Safaris

Overview and brief history

The Madikwe Game Reserve is a recent addition to South Africa’s park system and is a protected area. It was established in 1991 and consists of 750 km2 bushland north of the small hamlet of Groot-Marico up to the Botswana border. It is named after the Madikwe or Marico River, on whose basin it is located.

Madikwe Game Reserve is located 90 kilometres north of Zeerust along the South Africa-Botswana border. Both the major cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, which can be accessed by automobile in around 4.5 hours, are located relatively near to the reserve. Also, it is only a one to two-hour drive from Gaborone, the capital of Botswana.

Madikwe Game Reserve was once utilized as farmland, however cultivation was unsuccessful due to the poor soil type. The South African government conducted significant research before deciding that the optimum use for this land would be as a provincial park to improve the economic situation in this otherwise underdeveloped region.

Project Phoenix, which transported complete breeding herds of elephants, Cape buffalo, south-central black rhinos, southern white rhinos, along with several kinds of antelopes, started the process of returning wildlife to the area in 1992. In addition to successfully reintroducing uncommon predatory species like lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and Cape wild dogs after Operation Phoenix, Madikwe has increased the number of large mammals in the reserve to over 10,000. The park currently has more than 60 different species of mammals.

4 Day Kruger Park Hotel SafariAlthough it is currently South Africa’s fifth-largest game reserve, few people are aware of it. The park presently covers 750 km2 in total, 680 km2 of which are privately held lands that have been included. An electric fence, stretching the full 150 km around the reserve, keeps the larger animals within their designated area.

Open grasslands and bushveld plains dominate the landscape, which is dotted with isolated mountains and rocky outcrops. Madikwe has earned a reputation as one of Africa’s best conservation areas thanks to the availability of all major species, including the highly sought-after “Big 5”.

Madikwe is unique in that it is situated in a transitional area between the bushveld and the Kalahari, where a number of uncommon species naturally occur. Though the winter nights can get chilly, the climate is often temperate to hot. At Madikwe, more than 350 bird species have been identified. There is a long-term proposal to create a corridor between the reserve and Pilanesberg Game Reserve because they are close by to one another.

Millions of years of erosion on the underlying geological formations in Madikwe have resulted in the complex soils and rocks that are present today. This erosion has also had a significant impact on the fauna of the area. Another element affecting the kind of flora that may be found in Madikwe is the temperature, which varies dramatically from one place to another. Madikwe’s erratic vegetation is a product of the many veld management techniques used by the farms that first inhabited the region.

Due to its numerous distinct ecosystems, Madikwe Game Reserve is home to a wide range of species. Mountains, a plateau, rocky hills, a perennial river, seasonal wetlands, bushveld, savannah, and many sand and clay ecosystems are all included within the reserve’s large geographical breadth.

The Madikwe Game Reserve is regarded as a rather exclusive location for safaris because day visitors are not permitted into the park. As a direct result of this, only vehicles linked to the park’s lodges are allowed inside the park during game drive hours.

Individuals, couples, and families traveling with kids have access to a choice of housing options, which range from eco-friendly bush camps to highly luxurious and ultra-luxurious lodges. Madikwe’s lack of malaria is just one benefit of visiting this reserve, which is highly advised.
