The story of Kapama Nature Reserve begins in 1986 when Johann Roode, a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for South Africa’s wild landscapes, purchased a farm called Moria. Initially intended as grazing land for his Bonsmara cattle herd, Roode’s plans soon evolved, inspired by the potential of ecotourism and the opportunity to protect this unique terrain.
Within a year, he acquired a second piece of land, Drakensig, and committed to transforming this property into a private game reserve. In 1989, he initiated the construction and development of Kapama, setting the foundation for the exceptional safari destination it is today.
Although Johann Roode’s initial dream was to establish a haven for wildlife and tourists, it was his son, Bernard Roode, who expanded on this vision after Johann’s tragic passing in 2002.
Today, under Bernard’s stewardship, Kapama has grown to become a premier South African safari destination, offering luxury accommodations and a range of ecotourism activities. This family-led dedication makes Kapama not only the largest privately-owned game reserve in the area but also a reflection of the Roode family’s enduring commitment to conservation.
Kapama Private Game Reserve has seen considerable growth since its establishment, expanding both in land size and diversity of wildlife.
A significant milestone occurred with the construction of the iconic Kapama River Lodge in 2006, which helped shape the future of the reserve as a luxury safari destination. Over the years, the reserve has acquired additional parcels of land, most notably Gwalagwala and Hongonyi.
These areas have been transformed into Southern Camp and Kapama Karula, the reserve’s flagship lodge known for its ultra-luxurious facilities.
Each lodge within Kapama Game Reserve offers a distinct experience, showcasing a unique style and atmosphere to cater to a diverse range of guests. For example, Buffalo Camp is reminiscent of a traditional safari camp, bringing the history of Moria farm full circle by offering an intimate, rustic experience.
Kapama Karula, by contrast, is an epitome of contemporary luxury, with its stunning location along the Klaserie River. Meanwhile, Southern Camp provides a warm and welcoming ambiance, River Lodge delivers vibrant and dynamic experiences, and Kapama Kruger Homestead offers an exclusive residence option for larger groups or private events.
According to Shangaan lore, courage and bravery were attributes celebrated by reimagining deceased chiefs as lions, who continued to protect the land and its people. A legendary lion named Kapama is said to have once roamed these lands, evading hunters with cunning skill. Over time, the people came to view him as more than just an animal; he was believed to be the reincarnation of a former chief or king, condemned to roam in the form of a lion.
This extraordinary lion became an unlikely ally during a period of drought and hardship. As the land withered, Kapama the lion was able to locate water sources and abundant game, helping the villagers survive by allowing them to follow him rather than hunt him.
When the drought finally broke, a river appeared where none had flowed before, and it was named Kapama in his honour. The name Kapama thus symbolises resilience, strength, and the interwoven histories of the land and its people.
One of the primary reasons visitors flock to Kapama Nature Reserve is its rich biodiversity. The reserve is part of the larger Greater Kruger National Park area, which is known for its remarkable density of wildlife, including the famed “Big Five” – lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalos.
Apart from the Big Five, Kapama boasts a diverse ecosystem that supports cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, and an array of antelope species. Its varied terrain, encompassing grasslands, riverine woodlands, and bushveld, offers ideal habitats for a multitude of species.
Bird enthusiasts can also delight in the reserve’s impressive avian diversity, with over 350 recorded bird species. These include the majestic African fish eagle, the brightly coloured lilac-breasted roller, and several species of hornbills.
The reserve’s vegetation varies across its different sections, providing a rich tapestry of plant life that sustains its diverse wildlife. The presence of Acacia trees, marula trees, and mopane woodlands creates lush habitats that contribute to the reserve’s ecological diversity. These trees also offer shade and forage for many animals, supporting a balanced and thriving ecosystem.
Kapama Game Reserve features five luxury lodges, each with its own distinctive character, offering guests a variety of ways to connect with the wilderness. These lodges are strategically located across the reserve, providing a unique vantage point from which to experience the reserve’s beautiful landscapes and vibrant wildlife.
Beyond luxury and wildlife encounters, Kapama Private Game Reserve is dedicated to the preservation of South Africa’s natural heritage and supports numerous conservation efforts. The reserve’s management recognises the importance of sustainable tourism and has implemented various initiatives to minimise the environmental impact of its operations.
From water conservation projects to anti-poaching units, Kapama is actively engaged in protecting its unique biodiversity.
Kapama also contributes to the well-being of local communities, offering employment and skills development opportunities for residents. By integrating community and conservation, the reserve fosters an inclusive approach to tourism, ensuring that local people benefit from its success and encouraging a shared commitment to preserving the wilderness for future generations.
Today, Kapama is more than just a game reserve; it is a legacy of conservation, culture, and family dedication. With its deep-rooted history, luxurious accommodations, and commitment to protecting the natural environment, Kapama Game Reserve offers guests an unparalleled safari experience.
Spanning 13 000 hectares of pristine African bush, Kapama offers the perfect sanctuary to a wide variety of wildlife. Here, more than 40 different species of mammals, including the BigFive – elephant, lion, leopard, African buffalo, and rhinoceros, as well as 350 bird species, thrive in their natural habitat. Visitors get the opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in the wild by means of two guided game drives daily, nature walks, and once-in-a-lifetime elephant encounters.
Kapama’s four luxury lodges each have a charm of their own – Buffalo Camp delights with its old- worldly feel, Southern Camp offers warmth and hospitality, River Lodge’s ambience is festive year-round, and Karula’s elegance is simply breathtaking. The more adventurous spirits among us can experience the bush like never before by opting for one of our romantic sleep-outs.
To create the best experience possible for our luxury Kruger Safari guests, Kapama now also boasts a private aeroplane and airstrip to receive guests travelling directly from Johannesburg or Cape Town, as well as a courtesy transfer service from Eastgate Airport.
Johann Roode bought the farm, Moria, in 1986 for his Bonsmara cattle to graze on. He soon needed more land, however, and a second portion, Drakensig, was acquired. Within the next year Johan decided to shift his focus to eco-tourism, a move that gave birth to Kapama Private Game Reserve.
Johann began to develop Kapama into an ecotourism destination dedicated to the celebration and preservation of this breathtaking pristine wilderness, with construction starting in 1989. Buffalo Camp is now located on the land that used to be Moria, and River Lodge stands proudly on the former Drakensig.
Nowadays, Kapama is still owner-managed by the Roode family, making it the largest family-owned reserve in the area. After Johann’s tragic passing in 2002 his wife, Lente Roode, and their two children, Bernard and Adine, took over the management and development of the reserve. Bernard has since further expanded the land through the acquisition of, most significantly, Gwala Gwala and Hongonyi. These two portions of land lent themselves perfectly to the development of the modern Southern Camp and the luxurious Karula.
According to local legend, Shangaan chiefs who demonstrated acts of extreme bravery were honoured by being reborn as lions. Kapama was the name of the last chief of this revered bloodline.
It is said that, if you look deep enough into the eyes of one of Kapama’s lions, you will be able to stare past the beast and into the soul of a Shangaan chief.
According to local folklore, a solitary lion named Kapama lived on the land. According to the legend, he was no ordinary lion. Not only was he enormous in size, he was also crafty beyond measure. Every young man in the village had pitted their hunting skills against this great beast, but he evaded them at every turn. So proficient was Kapama in thwarting his prey, that the people began to believe he was an ancient king who, through some misdeed, had been condemned to wander the land in the body of an animal.
There came a time when the earth saw no rain for many months, and the people and animals suffered greatly. But the great “king” Kapama knew where to find water and would track the fattest game. The young men of the village, who had grown to revere the old “king”, quickly learnt to follow rather than hunt him, enabling them to feed their people. When the rains finally came, it crashed down to the hard earth in torrents, giving birth to a new river, which was named Kapama. According to legend, the “king” had by then paid his dues and was never seen again.
Nestled between the Blyde River Valley and Kruger National Park, Kapama Private Game Reserve’s four individually appointed and luxurious camps offer an escape for nature lovers from across the globe. This untouched part of Africa is home to some of our most endangered, beautiful and fascinating wildlife species.

Teams are divided into groups of 7 or 8 and supplied with hand-held GPS devices to navigate their way through the African bush on a game-viewing vehicle.
The aim of the game is to reach as many checkpoints as possible within the allowed three hours. With a map, tasks, questions, and a piggy bank, the teams must find their way to the finish line by answering questions correctly and using the “money” from their piggy bank to buy information and tools they might need along the way.
The GPS system also offers them the best routes to the finish, but the face fines for exceeding the speed limit or going too far.
Teams receive more ‘money’ to add to their piggy bank after completing a specific checkpoint’s challenges successfully.
This experience can be tailored to incorporate company-related questions into the activities. Although the race is 3 hours long, it can be adjusted depending upon availability.
