When you stay at the Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge, which is hidden between ancient Tamboti trees, you can have an unforgettable African bush adventure.

Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the largest and most popular game reserves in South Africa. It is made up of about 75,000 hectares of bushland that goes all the way to the border with Botswana.

The Reserve used to be farmland until 1991. It is now back to its natural state, with 86 mammals (from mice to elephants), 420 bird species (110 of which are rare), and 104 tree species. The Reserve is mostly grasslands and bushveld, with some lone mountains and rocky outcrops. It is home to cheetahs, wild dogs, leopards, hyenas, lions, elephants, black and white rhinos, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and different kinds of antelope.

Madikwe is different in many ways. The Reserve has a lot of different kinds of plants because it has a lot of different kinds of landforms. The different kinds of animals in the Reserve are directly affected by the plants, waterways, landforms, climate, soil, and other things, like the fact that the area used to be a farm. In the bushveld areas, you can find Impala, Gemsbok, and Bush buck. Along the Marico (Madikwe) River, you can find Klipspringer and Mountain reedbuck.

The staff at Madikwe Hills will make sure that your stay is a pleasant one that you will remember, whether you want to go on an exciting wildlife holiday or have your wedding and honeymoon in an exclusive safari setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge situated?

Madikwe Hills can be reached in approximately 4.5 hours driving from Johannesburg and Pretoria (with approximately an hour spent within the park itself).

What sustainability and eco-friendly practices are implemented at Madikwe Hills?

Madikwe Hills have installed low-energy heat pumps in all of their suites to use less electricity (roughly one quarter that of traditional geyser elements) for hot water heating needs, while swimming pool pumps run on timers to further save on power costs. Furthermore, all LED low energy light bulbs were replaced with LED versions. All cleaning products sold at SABS-approved and environmentally friendly are equipped with carbon filters that effectively filter chlorine out of water after it has passed through a water treatment plant. They utilize environmentally-friendly bacteria and ozone treatments in their septic tanks to ensure no harm comes to wildlife or the bush, and have even auctioned safari experiences and donated the proceeds toward anti-rhino poaching efforts. If guests are intrigued, they can help make a difference by sponsoring rhino notching exercises (they will participate themselves) or making donations towards equipment necessary for anti-poaching teams. Every guest receives a brand new aluminum, BPA-free water bottle complete with purifiers in their room – and by refilling and reusing this aluminum water bottle during game drives and gym classes they help save an average of 2000 plastic bottles each month!

Does Madikwe Hills cater for families with children?

Little Madikwe Private Villa or exclusive Camp welcomes children of all ages (whereas Main Lodge does not cater for those under 10), making it perfect for families wanting to experience special safari adventures together. There is also a dedicated child minder available during family bookings so that parents and young family members alike can fully indulge in “me time”, in addition to family time!
