Thakadu River Camp is in the eastern part of the beautiful Madikwe Game Reserve on the banks of the Marico River. The 4-star tented suites at aha Thakadu River Camp are beautifully decorated and set in a riverine canopy with a wide range of animals and plants.

Before it became the Madikwe Game Reserve, the land where it is now was used to raise cattle and grow crops. Due to bad farming practises and bad management, most of the farming in the area failed. When the plants got so bad that they could not be used anymore, there was talk of giving the land to poor and young cattle farmers.

Before Madikwe Game Reserve became an official reserve, work had already started to get rid of many of the abandoned farm buildings, plants that were not native to the area, and hundreds of kilometres of old fencing. Many of these old buildings have been saved and turned into workshops and park offices. Some of the outposts were also left behind and are now used to house staff from the reserve and game scouts.

Recently, a few private farms were given permission to use this land. The farm owners have to follow the rules of the park because. Community Lodges, which are run by local villages, are another new thing. The local communities are helped by the money made from these community lodges.

Thakadu River Camp is a tented safari camp that is owned by the community as a whole. It is an ecotourism partnership between the Molathedi Community, aha Hotels and Lodges and the North-West Parks Board. The idea is new to South Africa and has a lot of benefits for the community as a whole.
