Discover the Garden Route in three days of non-stop fun and adventure – a perfect trip for thrill-seekers who want to see the best of this stunning coastal region in South Africa.
You’ll drive along the scenic Route 62, the world’s longest wine route, and visit the amazing Cango Caves. You’ll have the chance to interact with elephants, canoe in the Wilderness National Park, bungee jump from the highest bridge in the world, explore the enchanting Tsitsikamma forest, and go on a 4×4 safari to spot the Big Five.
Note that children under the age of eight are not permitted on these scheduled group tours, and children aged eight to seventeen must be accompanied by a paying adult. Children under the age of 18 are not permitted in shared dorm rooms and must book private rooms.
You will spend your two nights in comfortable budget accommodation with shared bathrooms. On your first night in Oudtshoorn you will overnight at Uthando Backpackers and on the second night at Sedgefield in PiliPili Beach House.
Uthando provides a natural home-away-from-home setting, as well as free Wi-Fi, a pool, and a variety of accommodations ranging from single or double / twin rooms to shared rooms. You have the option to reserve a private room at the backpackers for an extra fee, subject to availability.
It is known for its braai meals, which include ostrich kebabs and hearty breakfasts.
PiliPili offers backpackers a lively stay on Sedgefield’s quiet Myoli beach. Each room has access to the public wrap-around terrace, which has views of the coastline.
This itinerary is an indication of the tour’s route but may be subject to change and may occasionally run in reverse or in a different order to accommodate activity availability.
Travel time ± 6hr / ±450km
Start your day with pickup between 06:00 and 08:00 from your Cape Town CBD or Stellenbosch accommodation and hit the road along Route 62, the world’s longest wine route.
Enjoy the stunning views of mountains, valleys, vineyards and orchards, stop at a farm stall to taste some local delicacies before reaching Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world and the gateway to the amazing Cango Caves.
Explore the underground wonders of the Cango Caves, a network of limestone chambers with incredible formations and ancient paintings. Choose between the Heritage Tour, a leisurely walk through the main chambers with great acoustics and insights from your guide, or the Adventure Tour, a more challenging route that involves crawling and squeezing through narrow passages.
Spend the night in Oudtshoorn. You can either go to town for a restaurant meal or join an optional outdoor braai (similar to barbeque) – subject to availability – where you can try local specialties like ostrich kebabs, ‘boerewors’ sausage, ‘potbrood’ bread and salad.
You will stay at the Uthando Backpackers or similar accommodation, depending on availability.
Travel time ± 3hr / ±350km
You can join an optional Elephant Observation Nature Bush Walk (own expense) in the early morning to follow and observe three orphaned elephants, rescued from poachers, in their natural habitat.
Later, you’ll enjoy a relaxing canoe ride along the reed-lined riverbanks in Wilderness and observe the variety of birds in the area.
The adventure reaches its peak at Bloukrans Bridge, the world’s highest commercial bridge bungy jump where you may dare to plunge 216m down with nothing but an elastic cord. If you’re not up for the bungy jump, you can opt for a leisurely walk in nature near the bridge or watch the jumpers from the bridge.
Spend the evening in Sedgefield, where you can dine at local restaurants.
You will overnight at the PiliPili Beach House or similar accommodation, depending on availability.
Travel time ± 6hr / ±450km
