This 4-hour cultural tour of Soweto getting around on a bicycle is one of the most popular ways to experience the vibrant city. Explore Soweto with a knowledgeable tour guide; learn more about its turbulent past and discover the heart and soul of the great city as it is today.

From stories about Nobel Peace Prize winners to visiting historic sites and museums and participating in the world’s highest SCAD freefall, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in Soweto. Lunch at the Boma & Outdoor Restaurant at Backpacker’s Lodge in Soweto. Time permitting, the adrenalin junkies have the option of bungee jumping off Orlando Towers.

A buffet can be booked with the Tuk-Tuk tour at an additional R 135 per person.

Itinerary:

4 Hour Soweto Bicycle Tour

Tours depart from Soweto Backpackers at 10h00, 13h00 and 15h00.

Lunch is served after the 10h00 tour and before the 13h00 tour.

Vilakazi Street

Both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu resided in Vilakazi Street. Both men won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and 1984, respectively. Madiba’s home is known today as the Mandela House Museum and is open to the public.

Hector Pieterson Museum

Hector Pieterson was a South African schoolboy who was shot and killed by police during the 1976 student uprisings against the enforcement of Afrikaans in schools. At the museum you can learn more about the history of the Anti-Apartheid movements that took place in Soweto.

Orlando Towers

The Orlando Towers are two cooling towers, painted in bright colours, with reminders of the local lifestyle. They are what remain of the power station. Today tourists can bungee jump 100m from the suspension bridge between the towers, or do the highest SCAD freefall in the world!

African style lunch

Lunch at the Boma & Outdoor Restaurant is a cultural experience. Stews, known as “potjie” in Afrikaans, and curries are prepared on a fire and served inside a hollowed-out loaf bread. This is known as a “bunny chow”. An alternative to bread, is “pap” – or maize porridge.

You can also opt for a buffet with the various stews, a traditional barbeque, referred to as a “braai”, and side salads. The braai buffet it only available for groups of 5 or more. The potjiekos buffet can be booked for 1 or more guests.
