The scenic drive to Cape Point takes you from the Cape Town City Bowl, through the modern coastal suburbs of the Atlantic Seaboard and the sleepy villages of Hout Bay and Noordhoek to the isolated and windswept plains of the nature reserve, where it plunges dramatically into the icy Atlantic Ocean.

The journey home takes you through the quaint seaside villages of False Bay, including the historic Simon’s Town which is home to South Africa’s Navy and the largest colony of penguins in the world. The day ends with a leisurely walk around to the world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens that forms part of Table Mountain National Park.

Atlantic Seaboard

We set off from the Cape Town City Bowl and travel through the modern coastal suburbs of the Atlantic Seaboard that runs parallel to the Atlantic Ocean. We pass the Blue Flag beaches of Clifton and stop for a ‘photo opportunity’ on the pristine beach of Camp’s Bay that lies at the foothills of the Twelve Apostles mountain range.

Hout Bay and Chapman’s Peak Drive

Hout Bay is a charming historic village that we pass through before we wind our way up Chapman’s Peak Drive which links the Atlantic Seaboard with the sleepy village of Noordhoek and the southern section of the Cape Peninsula. You have the option of stopping at Hout Bay Harbour and taking a boat ride to Seal Island.

We continue on to Cape Point, making our way over the famous 9-kilometre mountain pass which was first opened to the public in 1922, making it almost 100 years old. We stop along the way at a vantage point for a panoramic view of Hout Bay and the vast Atlantic Ocean.

Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point

The drive from the entrance of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve to Cape Point is like a mini safari. The reserve is home to 270 recorded bird species and an array of animals, including the endangered Cape zebra and eland.

First stop is the Lower lighthouse which was built in 1911 and is one of the oldest working lighthouses in southern Africa. You then have the choice of walking to the summit of Cape Point or whizzing up on the Flying Dutchman Funicular. At the top, enjoy panoramic views of the reserve and ocean, a short walk to the Upper lighthouse and a light lunch and refreshments at the restaurant on top of the mountain (own cost).

False Bay and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

On the return journey home, we travel through the quaint seaside villages of False Bay which includes Simon’s Town, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, St James and Muizenberg. You have the option of stopping off at Boulders Beach and viewing one of the largest colonies of African penguins in the world.

Our last stop before we return you to your hotel or guest house is the world-famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. This incredible natural park showcases the unique flora of the Cape Floral Kingdom which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
